Preppers aren’t out there. They are increasingly in the suburbs, in urban environments, and on rural properties purchased during the pandemic.
We live in an increasingly precarious world, with a climate that is already changed. We are dependent on just-in-time supply chains and global production. Preparing is an act of creative world-building in the face of these uncertainties that reduces dependence on consumerism.
Preparation by Design is a commonplace book of concepts, techniques and references to build self-reliance, starting in the soil.

Studio Landscape Operations and Maintenance (L.O.A.M.) is a landscape design and research practice founded by Kira Clingen. She holds a Master in Landscape Architecture and Master in Design Studies in Risk and Resilience from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design and a B.S. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and Environmental Policy Studies from Rice University.
Studio L.O.A.M. offers consulting services relating to climate preparedness, including site selection, mapping, archival research to identify historic waterways and wetlands and site design using low-energy technologies.
